like you're stepping into a spa for your emotions. where the tender soft hidden parts of you can feel wanted and revered, and raw fiery discontent is celebrated, for a profound unspooling of grief wound up tight inside from a lifetime of repression to “belong.”
this community ritual of emotional cleansing is a response to generations of unprocessed grief sitting heavy in our personal and collective bodies and lack of community outlets where we can be held to creatively express and be witnessed in the grieving process.
experience a unique medley of personal underworld storytelling - baring my soul of my own shame descent - with a powerful invitation for us to re-own the ugly, afflicted & shame-buried parts of ourselves as treasures to cherish.
when i was very young in korea, we’d go on family outings to the spa and jimjilbang. after we moved to america, we’d sometimes make the trek from sacramento to visit jimjilbangs in LA. it was (and still is) such a treat to get that refreshing, oh so geh oon han radiant post exfoliation glow feeling, all soft and hydrated from head to toe.
doing emotional work gives me similar satisfaction. metaphorically, entering into hot water of discordant feelings, submerging myself into it, brings release. when i sit with sticky feelings of shame, like ddeh that’s been sitting on my skin for years, decades, even my whole lifetime! letting myself bear the discomfort of shedding it to let the naked truth of me breathe free, is so liberatingly cathartic.
we have cleansing rituals for the physical body, but why don’t we have purging rituals for our emotional body?
this is what Pearl Spa’s about.
